Today we had a captivating and educative day. After spending a whole
week in the beautiful city of Vukovar it was about time we learn about the hard
times it went through.
At first we visited "The memorial center of 90's war". There
we were welcomed by a major who also showed us around. He took us to an
improvised minefield. We had the opportunity to see all kinds of mines that are
used during war. Sadly some of them can still be found around so we learned
about the importance of knowing how to stay safe. Continuing our visit we were
fascinated from the old airplanes, ships, automobiles and tanks. The best part
was that most of them were handmade from the people of Croatia with the
materials they could find. Luckily we were allowed to take pictures inside so
we can save the memories forever.
Next we entered the musem called "The Day After" . It was
filled with pictures of wounded soldiers. They were really painful and some of
us couldn't help the tears. That was a powerful message that showed that wars
leave scars that last for a long time. From the musem we went down to a
basement that was filled with objects belonging to the people who faught in the
war and also different kinds of homemade weapons, old pictures and stories. It
felt like a piece of the past was in front of our eyes.
Right after that we went to the memorial site Ovčara. It was a
memorial for the 261 persons who were killed and tortured. Their pictures were
all over the walls and they faded and brightened with time to symbolize that
they are gone but live in memories. In the middle of the room there was a
spiral with the victims names that went to an eternal light. It was a touching
experience for all of us.
When lunch time came we went to Adica. We had an amazing lunch under
the shadow of the trees and spending out free time around the forest.
